The Eagle Huntress

Opening with an eagle hunter returning his eagle back to the wild after seven years of loyal service, to continue the circle of life.
God is great.  You are an innocent lamb, but this eagle deserves an offering.
He fed the eagle and stayed a bit, then he left.

The Eagle Huntress, Nurgaiv Aisholpan, a 13-year-old Kazakh girl from Altai Mountains, wanted to be an eagle hunter (bürkitshi), and eagle huntress, to follow her father's footstep.  Her father Agalai Rys Nurgaiv and grandfather Bosaga Rys are eagle hunters, generations of eagle hunters, all males until her.

Some time ago, I have watched an episode of a show, which I couldn't recall the names, but it's about this dying art--the falconry, fewer and fewer to follow.  While watching this film, I was wondering about the necessity of eagle hunting in modern life of Kazakhs and other still practicing.

It seems to me, it's more like a tradition, an art, a sport, but no longer an important way for sustaining their life.  Of course, fox still is useful for their nomadic life.

I must respect the tradition, but I must also mention the scene of seizing the eaglet was really hard to watch.  You wouldn't nick a toddler while the mother is shopping at stand of farmer's market, would you?  But this is how it's been for more than a millennium since the very beginning of this art.

They arrived unannounced at the Golden Eagle Festival in 2014, definitely caught lots of eyes, I bet we all imagining that she would be refused to enter the competition, but she was not.

And she won a gold cup and broke a speed record.  The men observed 15-second silence before retorts, which seemed a bit dramatic in a so-called documentary film.  If you have searched for the stories, you would find some questioning, if this film presented the facts.  You might want to read The Eagle Huntress: Ancient Traditions and New Generations by Adrienne Mayo.

Whether if this film is faithful to facts and truths and the true woman status in Mongolia, I am pretty sure Aisholpan is the only female to win the first place, and also likely to be the youngest.  And I don't believe that the judges gave her higher scores because she was a little girl, that 5-second time was simply can't be affected by her age and gender.

As she and her father went for a hunt, it's personal for her to prove that she really is a eagle huntress.  Her father's friend said something, I think he meant more Aisholpan than chicks.
When a baby sees in the nest, it then repeats when it grows up. -- Kazakh proverb
